Dreams Lead To Change

As part of Croydon Council’s commemorative arts and heritage programme SCT 150, I was commissioned by to create Dreams Lead To Change to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Samuel Coleridge Taylor. Alongside 9 local UK-based Black/Global Majority practitioners the banner was exhibited across Croydon North End and High Street.

Dreams Lead To Change is a celebration of the life, legacy and work of composer and conductor Samuel Coleridge Taylor. The statement intends to uplift and inspire members of the community and celebrate the legacy of Samuel Coleridge Taylor. The artwork is centered around his music, work as a Pan-Africanist and life growing up in Croydon.

The political and cultural iconography references the powerful symbol of solidarity and unity in the Pan-African movement, whilst also highlighting the importance and contribution Coleridge-Taylor has made to British history and culture.

This banner is a community reminder that you can achieve anything, and that dreams really do lead to change. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a man of Sierra Leonean and English heritage, faced adversity and broke barriers to make his dreams a reality. His legacy inspires us to believe that if he can do it, so can we.
