Totemic relationships, mixed media, 2025

Totemic relationships is a celebration of my dual West African and Caribbean heritage. Inspired by my research into totemic beliefs and symbols in both African and Indigenous Caribbean tribes I decided to create a totem of my own which celebrates the beliefs and values of my community. The totems illustrated are things in my community that should be protected, respected and cared for. This piece references Nigerian wood carvings/ ceramics ,Taíno ceramic art forms, Pan-Africanism and British diasporic fashion from the 70s to present day.
